The Legend of Cactus Johnny

"The Story"

Legend tells of a prospector named "Cactus Johnny" who spent his life searching the desert for gold.  Many thought him crazy, just another man driven mad by the lure of riches.  All he would say was, "I know it's out there, I can smell it.  It's my gold and I'm gonna find it".

To everyone's surprise, he came into town one day leading his mule loaded with so much gold it was spilling on the ground.  "I told you it was out there, and there it's gonna stay 'till you find it for yerself", he said.  The next day, Cactus Johnny disappeared back into the desert and was never seen again.

Years passed and hundreds of people had combed the desert, but found no sign of the mine, Cactus Johnny, or his mule.  Facts grew sketchy, people who had known him were gone now.  The legend of Cactus Johnny's lost mine was born.

Cactus Johnny, however, lived to be quite old.  He decided he didn't want his mine to die with him and that an adventure was in order.  Sneaking back into Whisper Gulch one night, he buried several copies of his map in and around Boot Hill showing the whereabouts of his lost mine.  Then he posted a notice on the jail telling what he had done, left a gold nugget to prove its, and waited for the excitement to begin.  Begin, it did.

Many people just started out across the desert after finding their maps.  Some didn't even bother to get a map, gold fever had struck.  Others took the time to get their mule and supplies before leaving.  If anyone thought it would be an easy trip, they were wrong.  Several suffered sunstroke and wandered around in circles for days, most had to turn back when their provisions ran out...
